MANTUA AND SABBIONETA
The court of the Gonzagas

Mantua, the city of the great poet Virgil, was probably founded around the fifth century B.C.: traces of Etruscan civilization are scattered all over the territory of Mantua, in particular in Revere. In the centuries after its foundation, Mantua first became a Roman colony and then was conquered by the Byzantines and Lombards until after the year 1000, when it became a possession of Canossa. From this period on the land began to be transformed by man with the start of the regulated navigation on the river Po and the river Mincio. Mantua lived the richest period of its history under the rule of the Gonzagas, who turned it into one of the protagonists of Italian Renaissance: at their court were invited artists such as Andrea Mantegna, Leon Battista Alberti and Giulio Romano. After being ruled by the Austrians and the French, Mantua became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In the early years of the 1900, the area became the scene of the great works of improvement that gave the 'valance' look we know today.

Small but a true jewel of the Renaissance, the town of Sabbioneta with over 4000 inhabitants is situated in Lombardy, in the province of Mantua. The origins of its name can be traced to the clean sand that replaced what was once a dank swamp.
