VERONA
The court of the Della Scala family
The foundation of Verona is dated to 49 BC during the Roman occupation that would last until the first century A.D. After the Roman domination Verona faced a period of great splendor during the reign of Theodoric (489-526) that precedes the domain of the Lombard King Alboin. Verona is also famous for being home to people, such as Valerius Catullus and Vitruvius, but is also the city of Charlemagne and his son Pepin. The town was the capital of the Della Scala lords in the 13th and the 14th century. Numerous monuments date back to that period, including the impressive Della Scala Tombs. Yet Verona is probably most renowned for the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. With the rule of Venice, Verona, will nurture the intellectual and cultural aspects becoming a must for artists and thinkers such as Goethe, Heine, Stendhal and Valery and this period of calm will last until 1797. Finally, in October of 1866, the population of Verona chose to join the Kingdom of Italy.
