VICENZA
The court of Palladio
Vicenza is one of the oldest cities in Veneto: founded by the Euganean, under the domination of the Gauls until 157 BC, then Roman colony, devastated by the barbarians, flourished under the Goths and the Lombards and the Franks, long time Venetian territory. The sixteenth century was its golden age, when rich Patricians enriched the city with magnificent architectural monuments thanks to Andrea Palladio, one of the greatest architects of the 1500's, who designed noble palaces, villas and the famous Olympic Theatre. After the Napoleonic period, Vicenza passed to Austria in 1813 but in 1848 it rose against them. In 1866 it was united to the Kingdom of Italy. Vicenza was dubbed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
